Kipngetich and Ping Lead Cowboy and Cowgirl Cross Country Sweep of Weis-Crockett Invitational; Cowgirls Place 12th at Wisconsin Pre-Nationals
October 19, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State men's and women's cross country swept the proceedings at the second annual Weis-Crockett Invitational, with a separate women's squad placing 12th overall in a loaded field at the Wisconsin Pre-Nats.
The Cowboys kicked off action at the Weis-Crockett Invitational Saturday with a season-best 18 points in the 8K, with all five Cowboy scorers placing in the top seven overall. Additionally, 15 of the top 16 finishers individually are currently on the Cowboy roster, with a few of them competing unattached. All-American Denis Kipngetich led the way for the Cowboys with his third career victory at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course (2023 Cowboy Jamboree and 2023 NCAA Midwest Regional).
Kipngetich clocked a winning time of 23:26.0, which went under the previous meet record by over two seconds. He was followed closely by Laban Kipkemboi, Fouad Messaoudi, Will Muirhead and Alex Stitt, who placed second, fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
Immediately following in the women's 6K, the Cowgirls earned a perfect score of 15 points on the day with the sister duo of Lauren and Grace Ping placing first and second with times of 21:45.4 and 21:46.0, respectively. Overall, Cowgirl athletes took home the top eight spots with Madi Surber, Autumn Michalski (unattached), Payton Hinkle, Kaylie Politza, Gentry Turner (unattached) and Mandeep Sangha finishing third through eighth.
At the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in Madison, the No. 19 Cowgirls placed 12th as a team, which likely earned them several points towards qualification to the NCAA Championships, should they not place first or second at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in November. 15 of the nation's top-25 teams competed at the Wisconsin Pre-Nats, making it one of the best regular-season fields this season. Sivan Auerbach led the way with an impressive 39th-place finish as she moved up through the field at every split. Josphine Mwaura, Victoria Lagat, Colleen Stegmann and Jinane Mahi rounded out the Cowgirl scorers in Madison.
Up next for the Cowboys and Cowgirls is the Big 12 Cross Country Championships, which will be held Nov. 1 at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas. The Cowboys have won four straight conference titles on the grass, with the Cowgirls winning two of the last three Big 12 titles.
