Cowboy Baseball Drops Series Opener To BYU
March 10, 2022 | Cowboy Baseball
ARLINGTON, Texas - Oklahoma State took an 8-6 loss to BYU in the opening game of its weekend series Thursday night at Globe Life Field.
Â
With the loss, the sixth-ranked Cowboys dropped to 7-6, while BYU improved to 8-3.
Â
Freshman Roc Riggio went 2-for-5 with a home run, his second of the season, and two RBIs to lead the Pokes, while Nolan Mclean was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Garrett Martin also finished with two hits.
Â
OSU starter Victor Mederos gave up eight runs in six innings, striking out five and walking three, to fall to 0-1 on the season. The righty allowed five hits, three of them home runs.
Â
BYU didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard, plating three first-inning runs. Cole Gambill was responsible for the first two, putting a ball into the seats in right field, before Collin Reuter followed with a solo shot of his own to make it 3-0 Cougars.
Â
The Cowboys struck back in the top of the third. Zach Ehrhard drew a two-out walk before Riggio hit his second home run of the season to right field, making it a one-run ballgame.
Â
OSU would then take its only lead of the game in the fifth. Ehrhard and Riggio each singled to open the inning, setting up runners on the corners with nobody out. McLean then doubled down the left-field line with one out, driving in both runners and putting the Cowboys on top. Marcus Brown extended the lead with a two-out RBI single to give OSU a 5-3 advantage.
Â
After not allowing a hit over four-straight innings and at one point retiring 11 in a row, Mederos got into trouble in the sixth.
Â
The Cougars would score five runs in the inning, taking the lead for good on a pinch-hit grand slam with two outs from Ryan Sepede to go back on top 8-5.
Â
The Cowboys scored their final run of the night in the eighth inning. Brett Brown drew a walk in a pinch-hit opportunity, and David Mendham, also in a pinch-hit spot, then doubled into the left-center field gap to cut the deficit to two runs.
Â
The two teams return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m., with Saturday's series finale set for 2:30 p.m.
