STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State's women's basketball team couldn't shake off a rough shooting night and fell to No. 19 Texas, 61-55 on Tuesday. The Cowgirls slide to 13-10 overall and 4-8 in conference play on the year in front of 1,997 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Texas controlled the game from the paint with 16 offensive rebounds in the game and outrebounded OSU 47-29 to improve to 20-5 overall and 10-3 in league play.
Both teams started slow offensively, but the Cowgirls finished the opening period with a 11-10 lead. OSU clamped down on the defensive end and held the Longhorns to just 29 percent from the field and forced seven turnovers.
In the second, Braxton Miller got it going for the Cowgirls with eight points in the period on 3-of-6 shooting, including back-to-back threes. However, the Longhorns took the lead at 25-23 heading into halftime thanks to a 26-to-15 rebounding advantage.
The Cowgirls fell behind by as many as eight points in the third, but Miller sunk a jumper in the closing seconds of the period to pull OSU within three points at 42-39. LaTashia Jones had five points and three rebounds, including a 3-pointer in the period. The senior forward tallied 13 points and six rebounds with three baskets from beyond the arc in the game.
It came down to the wire in the final period, but the Longhorns were able to hit critical free throws down the stretch to pull away from the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls had three players score in double figures in Vivian Gray, Jones and Miller but the team shot 34 percent from the field and 29 percent from long distance.
OSU will be back in action Feb. 16 when it travels to Ames and play Iowa State.
