STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State's women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow first half and suffered its second consecutive Big 12 defeat on Saturday with an 84-71 setback to No. 20 Iowa State in front of 1,897 fans in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
With the loss, the Cowgirls dipped to 12-6 overall and 3-4 in league play with the loss.
The Cyclones knocked down 12 of their 26 3-point attempts in the contest and improved to 15-5 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Iowa State jumped out to an early 32-9 lead at the end of the first period thanks to an 11-0 run to start the game, while OSU converted just 3-of-20 from the floor in the opening period.
Braxton Miller strung together three jumpers in the closing minutes of the second period, but Iowa State maintained its lead and carried a 47-20 advantage at the end of the first half. The sophomore guard totaled 17 points, three rebounds and two assists for the game.
The Cowgirls offense clicked in the third and Jaden Hobbs capped off a 15-0 run for OSU with a corner 3-ball at the 4:27 mark to cut the deficit to 14 at 52-38.
Vivian Gray had the hot hand and tallied 12 points in the third, shooting 3-of-4 from two-point range and knocking down both of her attempts from long distance. Miller drained a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the period to pull OSU within 11 at 59-48 heading into the fourth.
Gray tacked on 13 more points in the fourth to continue her impressive second half and set a new career-high with 30 total points on the night. The sophomore forward made 11-of-25, including 3-of-5 from range.
For the game, the Cowgirls hit just 36 percent from the field and 62 percent at the free-throw line.
OSU will be back in action Jan. 30 when it hosts No. 2 Baylor at 7 p.m.
