Trevor Boone
Cowboys’ Comeback Falls Short
May 13, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State dropped its series to Baylor Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to the Bears at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Cowboys, who fell to 24-23 overall and 6-13 in Big 12 Conference play. OSU is now 6-10 in one-run games this season, with five of those losses coming in league play.
Trevor Boone provided OSU's only scoring with a two-run home run in the seventh inning. The Cowboys outhit BU, 8-6, with Garrett Benge and Jon Littell recording two hits apiece. Garrett McCain was 1-for-3 and maintains a Big 12-best .390 batting average.
BU (31-17, 10-10) plated all three of its runs off OSU starter Joe Lienhard in the fourth inning to hand the Cowboy sophomore the loss. The right-hander allowed six hits over 5 1/3 innings and struck out five as he fell to 2-2 on the season.
After a leadoff single in the fourth, Lienhard retired the next two Bears. But a two-run home run by Aaron Dodson put the visitors on the board, and Davis Wendzel followed that with a round tripper of his own to make the score 3-0.
OSU was not without its opportunities in the contest, but the Cowboys left seven runners on base and grounded into four double plays. The last of those ended the game as, following a one-out walk to Cade Cabbiness, Boone grounded sharply to third and BU turned a pair to secure the win.
The series concludes Sunday with the final game of the regular season at Reynolds Stadium. Five seniors – Tyler Buffett, Trey Cobb, Ryan Sluder, Dustin Williams and Matt Wilson – will be honored prior to the 1 p.m. first pitch.
