Cowboys Drop Game Two At Kansas
April 14, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
LAWRENCE, Kan. – A five-run sixth inning doomed Oklahoma State Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark as the Cowboys suffered a 6-5 loss to Kansas.
Â
The loss drops OSU to 20-14 on the season and 4-7 in Big 12 Conference play. The Cowboys will take the field for Sunday's rubber game at 1 p.m. looking to secure their first series win in Lawrence since 2007.
Â
Carson Teel suffered the loss on the mound in relief of starter Tyler Buffett as the southpaw worked the final three innings and allowed the decisive run in the sixth to fall to 2-3 on the season.
Â
Offensively, OSU collected eight hits, with Ryan Cash and Jacob Chappell collecting two apiece. Cash also picked up a pair of RBIs.
Â
KU (16-18, 5-6) took the game's initial lead in the opening inning, taking advantage of two batters being hit by pitches and a wild pitch and going up 1-0 on an RBI infield single by Jaxx Groshans.
Â
The Cowboys quickly answered, however, taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Jon Littell, in his first game since suffering an injury at TCU on March 26, led off the inning with a walk, and an error on a pop up to short center field off the bat of Trevor Boone put a pair of OSU runners in scoring position.
Â
Up next, Travis Wacker delivered a sacrifice fly to knot the score at 1-1, and two batters later, an RBI single by Cash gave OSU the lead.
Â
The Pokes extended that lead in the third. After Garrett McCain walked, he promptly stole second – his 13th stolen base of the season – and Colin Simpson followed with a run-scoring single to make the score 3-1.
Â
That lead reached 5-1 in the sixth when OSU plated a pair of unearned runs. Littell, who led off the inning by reaching on a two-base error, scored the first run on a wild pitch before Cash's second RBI single brought home the Pokes' fifth run.
Â
Momentum shifted in the bottom of the inning, however.
Â
Brett Vosik and Kaimana Souza-Paaluhi led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles against Buffett, who then issued consecutive walks to bring home a run.
Â
Teel would come out of the Cowboy bullpen, but the southpaw promptly surrendered another run with a walk to make it 5-3 before a two-RBI single by James Cosentino tied the score at 5-5. Matt McLaughlin followed with an RBI groundout for the go-ahead run before Teel finally got OSU out of the inning.
Â
KU's 6-5 lead would hold up over the final three innings as Blake Weiman and Stephen Villines kept the Cowboys off the scoreboard, with Villines earning his ninth save.
