Cowgirls Sweep A Pair Of Games To Take Win Streak To Four
March 10, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
OXFORD, Miss. ---- Oklahoma State Softball swept a pair of games Friday in an offensive outburst to start the Ole Miss Classic. The Cowgirls defeated Eastern Kentucky, 6-0, in game one and beat Jackson State, 11-2, in five innings in the second.Â
Â
Shea Coats (3-2) threw a complete-game shutout in the win over Eastern Kentucky. Coats allowed just three hits while striking out seven batters on her way to her third win. Â In her last 18.1 innings, she has recorded 24 strikeouts and not allowed a walk.Â
Â
"IÂ thought we had two good performances in the circle," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Obviously, Shea Coats has been outstanding in her last three outings. We're very happy to see her pitching well. Offensively, we're swinging the bat with runners on base. This team has been working hard."
Â
Oklahoma State (16-9) was in full control of the game from start to finish against Eastern Kentucky. The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third on a Taylor Lynch RBI double that scored Rylee Bayless and Alex Edinger.Â
Â
The scoring effort continued in the fourth with a Mackenzie Thomas single to the shortstop that scored Montgomery and made it 3-0.
Â
RBI hits from Jessi Haffner in the fifth and Lynch in the sixth extended OSU's lead to its eventual 6-0 final score.
Â
Lynch led the way at the plate going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk. Alongside Lynch, Haffner went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Â
"I think my mindset is different," Coats said. "I've had some really good talks with coach Morgan and coach Gajewski. It's really easy to pitch well when you're getting it done at the plate and that's happening. I think we're just on a really good roll."Â
Â
The second game of the day against Jackson State was never in doubt for the Cowgirls. OSU scored eight runs in the top of the first thanks to RBIs from Kristin Reasnor, Madi Sue Montgomery, Haffner, Edinger, Bayless and Lynch.Â
Â
Oklahoma State scored two more in the top of the third off RBIs from Lynch and Shippy to extend its lead to 10-0.
Â
The Cowgirls got on the board again in the top of the fourth with a Hayleigh Galvan RBI single to right field to extend its lead to 11-0.
Â
Jackson State scored two in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-2 but it was too little, too late for the comeback.
Â
Shippy was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Haffner was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer.
Â
Christina Biggerstaff (2-0) earned the win in the circle for the Cowgirls. She went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Logan Simunek closed the game for OSU in one inning of work, allowing zero hits.Â
