Nelson Hernandez is in his first season as OSU’s Director of Player Development.
Head coach Mike Boynton Jr. announced his hiring in an August 2023 press release:
“Nelson will be a valuable addition to our staff. He has a ton of experience in various roles around college basketball. He will be responsible for many tasks that are vital to a program’s success, including on-campus recruiting, team travel, student-athlete development and more. I look forward to seeing his immediate, positive impact.”
Hernandez was an assistant coach at Fresno State during the 2022-23 season and has more than a decade of Division I experience on his resume, having also served as video coordinator at Utah State (2010-14) and Clemson (2014-15), director of player development at Wright State (2015-16) and director of basketball operations for both VCU (2016-17) and LSU (2017-22).
The Brooklyn native completed his bachelor’s degree at Utah State in 2013 and added a Master of Education in 2018.
Throughout his professional career, Hernandez has mentored youth and built relationships to help communities and raise the profiles of organizations.
In 2011, Hernandez created and produced an award-winning basketball documentary about Louisville Women's Basketball guards Shoni and Jude Schimmel called "Off the Rez," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City and later aired on cable network TLC, in various well-known festivals and during the 2013 NCAA Women's Final Four on ESPN.
