STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Carson Benge is the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for his performance in week six.
A two-way standout, Benge helped lead OSU to a perfect 4-0 week. He was the Cowboys' leading hitter with a .526 batting average, going 10-for-19 at the plate, and earned his first-career win on the mound in the third start of his career.
As the Cowboys' right-fielder and DH, Benge delivered two home runs, three doubles and seven RBIs while scoring five runs. He accounted for 19 total bases and also turned in an outfield assist. He hit safely in all four games, tallying multiple hits in each.
In OSU's midweek win at Wichita State, Benge pitched five innings and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out a career-high five to earn the win. Also serving as the Cowboys' DH, he went 3-for-4 with a double, marking his career high in hits.
In the series sweep of Baylor, Benge went 7-for-15 at the plate (.467) with a pair of homers and seven RBIs. He tied his career best with three hits in the opener and made a key defensive play when he threw out a BU runner at third base to end the top of the 11th inning and keep the score tied. Benge followed that by hitting two home runs and driving in a career-high five in the second game, then capped his week with a 2-for-4 effort in the finale that included an RBI double.
Benge is now hitting .367 on the season to rank second on OSU and sixth in the Big 12.
