Pro Pokes Recap: Week 1
September 13, 2022 | Cowboy Football
Several former Oklahoma State Cowboys made their 2022 season debuts as the NFL kicked off the first week of its season on Thursday night.
A pair of Dolphins teammates, Emmanuel Ogbah and Tyreek Hill, are the longest tenured Cowboys playing in the NFL, and are still producing at a high level in their eighth year in the league. In the Dolphins season opening victory over the Patriots, Ogbah recorded four tackles, with a sack and two quarterback hurries. Hill brought in eight receptions for 94 yards and logged one rushing attempt for a gain of six in his first game as a member of the Dolphins, after spending his first six seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Four Cowboys who were a part of last year's Fiesta Bowl team made their NFL debuts on Sunday, led by Malcolm Rodriguez, who got the starting nod at linebacker for the Detroit Lions. The 2021 All-American had a solid debut making six tackles, including a tackle-for-loss on an attempted screen pass. Lions head coach, Dan Campbell, later said Rodriguez had zero missed assignments in the game. According to Pro Football Focus, Rodriguez was the 12th highest-ranked linebacker and top-ranked rookie in week one across the NFL.
Jaylen Warren recorded three rushes for seven yards and made several quality blocks in the opener for the Pittsburgh Steelers. His workload should increase after starting running back Najee Harris sat out of overtime in the Steelers win over the Bengals with a foot injury. Christian Holmes (WSH) and Devin Harper (DAL) also saw playing time, but did not record any stats.
Two former running backs for the Pokes logged carries in their season openers. Justice Hill rushed twice for four yards and added two receptions for seven yards for the Ravens. Chuba Hubbard (CAR) gained three yards on his lone carry of the game.
Tre Flowers began his sixth season in the NFL with a pass defended in the Bengals season opener, while Teven Jenkins started at right guard for the Chicago Bears in their win over the 49ers. Tylan Wallace (BAL), Tyron Johnson (LV), Amen Ogbongbemiga (SD) and AJ Green (CLE) all played on Sunday, but recorded no stats.
