In Honor of Black History Month: Recognizing OSU's Coordinators
February 26, 2022 | Cowboy Football
In recognition of Black History Month, Oklahoma State is highlighting OSU's coordinators: offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Derek Mason. The duo makes up the only pair of minority coordinators in the Big 12 Conference, is part a select group of minority coordinators in FBS football and has acheived impressive success in the coaching profession.
Dunn was elevated to Associate Head Coach in 2019 and has been on staff in Stillwater since 2011. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in January of 2020 and he is widely recognized as one of the best wide receivers coaches and offensive minds in college football. In 2017, both 247Sports and Football Scoop honored him as the nation's top receivers coach.
During his time in Stillwater, he has coached two winners of the Biletnikoff Award presented to the nation's top receiver: Justin Blackmon in 2011 and James Washington in 2017. Blackmon (2011), Washington (2017) and Tylan Wallace (2018) each earned first-team All-America status under Dunn's tutelage.
Seven of Dunn's 11 seasons at OSU rank among the top 10 in school history for scoring offense, total offense, passing offense and passing touchdowns. He has coached eight individual 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his 11 years at OSU.
Mason is a new arrival to Stillwater, and came to OSU after most recently serving as the defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2021. Before that Mason was the head coach at Vanderbilt from 2014-20 and the defensive coordinator at Stanford during a stay from 2010-13.
In his stint at Auburn last season, the Mason-led Tigers improved by 14.5% in third down defense from 2020 to move up 84 places in the final FBS rankings. Auburn also improved from the previous season in tackles for loss by 1.4 per game (up 65 places), rushing defense by 35 yards per game (up 33 places), first downs allowed by three per game (up 32 places), fourth down defense by 10% (up 21 places), sacks by .33 per game (up 13 places), scoring defense by three points per game (up 11 places) and total defense by 32 yards per game (up two places).
In 2012, Mason was a finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach, after directing a Stanford defense that is widely considered the program's best defense ever.
With Dunn and Mason leading the Cowboys' units into 2022, there is plenty to be optimistic about in OSU's future.
