Cowboys Land in Arizona for Guaranteed Rate Bowl, Gundy Discusses Matchup
December 21, 2022 | Cowboy Football
PHOENIX - The Oklahoma State football team traveled to Arizona for the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, the team was greeted at the airport and OSU head coach Mike Gundy had an arrival press conference. The team will settle in the rest of today before resuming bowl practice on Thursday. Here is some of what Gundy had to say about the bowl game and the matchup with Wisconsin:
Opening Statement:
"We are thrilled to be back in sunny Arizona and at the Guaranteed Rate Bowl with the Yellow Jackets. As always, we get off the plane to beautiful weather and great hospitality. We've had a really good three weeks of practice. Our team is really excited about being here, of course, families and everybody. So we are looking forward to a great week and a great game."
On Wisconsin:
"It will be a really good matchup. Wisconsin is a good football team. Very physical up front, as we know -- you guys have seen them out here -- on both sides of the ball. Really physical up front. Big guys, playing with tight ends and the wings. A little bit different than what we are used to. But a lot of respect for them and their tradition. I was excited about the matchup. Just heard about Wisconsin football forever. Never had a chance to play them. So great matchup and really good football team."
On getting to play on a baseball field:
"It's cool. I've seen the game. I've seen other bowls that have done that, so I'm looking forward to it. I heard the team -- the players talking about they were excited about playing in a Major League Baseball stadium. That's what it's all about. These bowl games are for the young men that have worked hard. They put a lot of time and effort in to when we left here the first of January last year to get back to this part. And they are very excited about it, so if it makes them happy, I'm in good shape. Well, once again, we are thrilled to be here. I'm speaking on behalf of all the family, all the kids. We travel with a big group. In the end, there is almost 400 of us out here with family, friends, players, administrative personnel. I can't thank our President, Dr. (Kayse) Shrum, our Athletic Director, Chad Weiberg, enough for all the support that I've had from them over the last year to help us get here. But we are thrilled to be in the Valley of the Sun with the Yellow Jackets, another week, playing in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl."
On the quarterback situation heading into the game:
"Spencer (Sanders) chose to go a different direction and so we have [Garret] Rangel that started a couple games for us and has played good in the games we've had him. His experience should help him, and he's had really good practices over the last three weeks. So I'm expecting him to play really well in the game."
