January 26, 2022 | Cowboy Baseball
IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State had five players recognized for 2022 Preseason All-Big 12 Conference Baseball awards, which were selected by the league's head coaches.
Cowboys Justin Campbell, Nolan McLean and Jake Thompson were named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, while Victor Mederos was selected as the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year and Roc Riggio tabbed as the Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year.
Campbell is coming off an All-American season in 2021 in which he starred on the mound and at the plate and was an All-Big 12 First Team honoree as both a pitcher and utility player. He went 7-2 with a 2.57 ERA and racked up 102 strikeouts in 84 innings pitched and also hit .269 with a home run and 10 RBIs.
A freshman last season, McLean was limited due to injury for much of the second half of the season but hit .263 with eight homers, 10 doubles and 20 RBIs in 39 games. He spent most of his time as an infielder but is also a prospect on the mound and was selected to the preseason team as a utility player.
Thompson was also chosen for the preseason team as a utility player as he has filled roles as an infielder, outfielder and DH during his three seasons with the Pokes. He is OSU's leading returning hitter in 2022 as he posted a .342 batting average a year ago to go along with four homers and 32 RBIs; he was also the Big 12's leading hitter in conference-only games with a .393 average.
Mederos transferred to OSU following his freshman season at Miami in 2021. The right-hander made 12 appearances for the Hurricanes, eight as a starter, and was 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA while posting 35 strikeouts in 44 innings.
Riggio passed up a professional career to join the Cowboys after he was an 11th-round pick by Milwaukee in last year's Major League Baseball Draft. The California native has played for USA Baseball national teams since age 14 and led Thousand Oaks High School to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship and a 29-1 record as a senior, setting school records for home runs (12), walks (45) and runs (52) along the way.
OSU, ranked as high as No. 7 in the national preseason polls, opens the 2022 season at Vanderbilt on Feb. 18.
