April 24, 2021 | Cowboy Tennis
The 18th-ranked Oklahoma State men's tennis team defeated No. 22 Texas Tech, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship.Â
Emile Hudd and Matej Vocel set the pace for the day by securing a 6-4 win against Texas Tech's Parker Wynn and Franco Ribero in their doubles matchup. Court three was the next to finish with the Cowboy duo of Luke Hammond and Mathieu Scaglia falling to Reed Collier and Isaac Arevalo, 6-3. The duo of Dominik Kellovsky and Henrik Korsgaard sealed the deal for OSU with a 6-4 against Dimitrios Azoides and Iligiz Valiev to put the Pokes on the board, 1-0.
Singles action was a close battle between the two teams from start to finish.Â
Court four was the first to finish, Mathieu Scaglia fell to Reed Collier, 6-3, 6-4 to pull Tech even. The Red Raiders continued the momentum onto courts five and six. Matisse Bobichon fell to Isaac Arevalo, 7-5, 6-0, to push Tech in front for the first time in the match. Court five finished shortly afterward with Etienne Donnet losing to Dimitrios Azoidis, 6-1, 7-5, to extend the Cowboy deficit to 3-1.
However, Emile Hudd answered back for the Cowboys. Hudd secured a first-set 7-5 victory against Illgiz Valiev and pushed the momentum into the second, taking the set, 6-2, to give OSU its first singles victory of the day.
The match rested on the outcomes of courts one and three.Â
Matej Vocel dropped his first set against Parker Wynn, 2-6, but Vocel wasn't out for the count. Vocel bounced back to win the second set, 6-4, before cruising to a 6-1 third-set victory to knot the match at 3-3.
The stage was set for Henrik Korsgaard to seal the deal. Korsgaard and Franco Ribero were neck and neck the entirety of the first set. Ribero snuck by to win the first set 7-5, but Korsgaard closed out the match with a pair of 6-1 wins to seal the victory for the Cowboys.Â
The Cowboys will now face No. 1 Texas on Sunday at 4 p.m. The last time OSU made it to the semifinals was in 2019, where OSU was dealt a 4-1 loss to Baylor.
