STILLWATER – Oklahoma State got back into the win column Saturday night, prevailing in a pitchers' duel against Missouri State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium to claim a 4-2 victory.
A four-run rally in the seventh inning and the pitching of Carson Teel carried the Cowboys to the win as they improved to 9-8 on the season and recorded their second win over the Bears (11-6) this season.
Teel impressed in his first start of the season, allowing only three hits and striking out eight over seven innings as he improved to 3-0 on the season. He now owns a 1.05 ERA and is holding batters to a .165 batting average over nine appearances.
Jon Littell provided the key hit in the pivotal seventh inning, while Jake Taylor also delivered an RBI in the frame.
MSU starter Dylan Coleman, who entered the game 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA in four starts, matched Teel in putting up zeroes over the first six innings. In fact, the Cowboys did not collect their first hit of the game until the fifth courtesy of Christian Funk's one-out double to right-center.
Teel worked out of trouble in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, MSU had a runner on third with just one out, but Teel struck out John Privitera before getting All-American Jeremy Eierman to fly out to end the inning. In the seventh, after giving up a single and a hit by pitch, the junior southpaw then struck out the next two Missouri State batters to get out of the jam.
Riding that momentum, Matt Kroon led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and stole second base before Colin Simpson singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Funk then walked to load the bases for Littell.
Littell delivered by smacking a two-run, two-RBI double to deep left-center field. Two batters later, Jake Taylor singled through the right side to bring home Funk and make the score 3-0. Taylor later scored on a wild pitch to extend the Pokes' lead to four.
Brady Basso relieved Teel in the top of the eighth, and the Bears plated an unearned run against the sophomore to get on the scoreboard and make the score 4-1.
In its last at bat, MSU mounted another comeback, loading the bases with one out on a walk and a pair of singles. That brought Joe Lienhard out of the bullpen and after allowing an RBI single to make the score 4-2, Lienhard snagged a line drive off the bat of Privitera and threw the ball to second for a double play to end the game.
OSU concludes its homestand Sunday when the Cowboys host Seton Hall at noon.
