STILLWATER – Oklahoma State dropped a series to Texas for the first time since 2012 as the Cowboys were swept by the Longhorns in a Friday doubleheader at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
OSU's late rally fell short in the opener as the Cowboys dropped a 5-4 contest before UT held the Pokes to only three hits in a 7-0 setback in the nightcap.
Â
The Cowboys are now 23-18 on the season and 6-11 in Big 12 Conference play, while UT improved to 30-16 and 9-8 in the league.
Â
In Friday's opener, OSU stranded 11 runners on base and left the bases full in the ninth in the one-run loss.
Â
The Cowboys jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Cade Cabbiness' first-career home run in the bottom of the second, but UT tied the game with runs in the third and fourth.
Â
That would be the only two runs OSU starter Joe Lienhard would allow as he worked a career-high seven innings and struck out six, one shy of his career best.
Â
But in the eighth, the Longhorns struck for three runs against Cole Hearrean and Trey Cobb. Hearrean allowed a leadoff double to pinch hitter Austin Todd, the only batter he faced, before Cobb came on and retired the next two batters.
Â
However, after working a 2-2 count to Kacy Clemens, UT's top hitter lined an RBI single off the glove of shortstop Cameron Dobbs to give the Horns the lead. Clemens' hit was the first of four-straight singles for the visitors as they took a 5-2 lead before Cobb got out of the inning.
Â
OSU remained down three in the ninth, but with one out, an error, single and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Garrett Benge then stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single to center field to make the score 5-4.
Â
A wild pitch by UT closer Beau Ridgeway moved the tying and winning runs into scoring position before a strikeout and walk loaded the bases with two away. But Ryan Sluder struck out to end the game as Ridgeway picked up his 10th save.
Â
In the nightcap, Tyler Buffett struck out a career-high 10 but was done in by a pair of Bret Boswell home runs as the UT second baseman hit a two-run shot in the second inning and followed that with a three-run blast in the third.
Â
OSU could get nothing going offensively against UT starter Morgan Cooper, who allowed just two hits over seven innings and racked up 11 strikeouts as he improved to 6-2 on the season.
Â
Benge, Colin Simpson and Cameron Dobbs collected the only hits for OSU — all were singles.
Â
The two teams are scheduled to conclude the series Saturday at 6 p.m. in a game airing live on ESPNU.
