What To Watch For - April 21-22
With the Pokes heading to two of the fastest tracks in the NCAA, big times are expected from both groups this weekend.
Matthew Fayers makes his outdoor debut Saturday at the Cardinal Classic, marking the Cowboy junior's return to action for the first time since the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Cowboy All-American Craig Nowak is also returning to the track after nearly a month since his last outing that also took place at Stanford.
Nowak is entered in the 1,500, for which he has a top-25 mark regionally, and the event he qualified for last year, the 5,000-meter run.
Should Nowak run in the 5K, he will be the first Cowboy this year to record a 5K time, an event that the Pokes have won at three of the last four Big 12 Championships.
Hassan Abdi and Sylvester Barus will also run in the 5,000-meter run, looking to record a qualifying time in that event after securing 10K qualifiers at the Stanford Invitational earlier in the season.
On the women's side, Kaytlyn Larson and Molly Sughroue take another stab at the 3,000-meter steeplechase hoping to move up in the region, and Anna Boyert and Ariane Ballner take on a stout 800-meter field in Palo Alto.
Over in Fayetteville, a revitalized sprints group takes center stage for OSU along with junior standout Ieva Zarankaite.
Last Time Out
Down at the Horned Frog Invitational, Jacob Fincham-Dukes finished fifth in the long jump with his mark of more than 26 feet. Although not wind-legal, Fincham-Dukes holds one of the best marks in the conference and in the west region.
The Leeds, England, native also ran in the 100-meter dash and recorded a time of 10.56 seconds (+1.9) to claim the best time by a Cowboy this year.
Ieva Zarankaite made it two-straight weekends of runner-up finishes in the discus when she took second via tiebreak at the Mt. SAC Relays with a near-personal best heave of 54.40m/178-5.0 feet.
Kaylee Dodd's 800-meter time was an outdoor personal best and keeps her at No. 6 in school history.
Clara Nichols bounced back this weekend with a time of 2:06.66 in the 800 that catapulted her into the West top-25, where she has finished the season in two of the previous three seasons.
Josh Thompson's 3:38.41 moved him up to third in school history, now just behind Cowboy greats Paul Larkins at two and German Fernandez's 3:37.76.
Savannah Camacho crushed her previous PR in the 1,500 by five seconds when she cruised to a 4:14.14 in the fastest section of the day. She now holds a top-five time in the region in the 1,500 to go along with her top-10 800-meter time.
Week Five – 2016
Last year, the Cowboys and Cowgirls competed in the same locations as 2017, but in differently named meets and the Cardinal Classic was called the Stanford Twilight a year ago.
The Pokes went three-for-three in qualifying times at the Stanford Twilight with Josh Thompson, Craig Nowak and Vegard Oelstad scoring top-25 marks in the 1,500-and 5,000-meter runs, respectively.
In Arkansas, John Teeters led the sprints group with his 10.16 in the 100-meter dash and Luis Martinez won the steeplechase for the Cowboys' sole win in the Natural State.
The Cowgirls picked up seven top-three finishes at the John McDonnell Invitational, including two from All-American and school-record holder Chase Ealey.
OSU Cross Country Course Selected as NCAA Host Site
The Oklahoma State Cross Country Course has been selected as the host site for the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships and the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
The event in 2020 will mark the first time in school history that Stillwater has hosted an NCAA Championships event for either cross country or track and field.
The 2019 regional will be the third time OSU has hosted that event and the first time since 2008.
The Cowboys have won 13 of the last 14 Midwest Regional crowns, including two when hosting, and the Cowgirls have won three since 2001 with their most recent coming in 2015.
Under coach Dave Smith, the Cowboys have been staples in the NCAA top-15 at the championships, finishing in that position in every year but one since 2005.
The 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional is scheduled for Nov. 15 and the 2020 NCAA Championships will take place on Nov. 21.
Magnani Leads USA at World Championships
Oklahoma State freshman and Big 12 Cross Country Newcomer of the Year Michelle Magnani finished 37th in the under-20 women's race to lead Team USA at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Sunday in Kampala, Uganda.
Magnani, a Cowgirl freshman from Moorpark, California, finished the six-kilometer race through the Kololo Independence Ground in 21:32 to help the American junior women claim 12th place in the Ugandan capital city.
OSU was represented in the U20 men's race as well by Cowboy freshman Alec Haines, who finished 58th.
Haines advanced to the World Championships as the seventh-fastest man at the U.S. Junior Championships in Bend, Oregon, but was the No. 4 American finisher in Kampala with his time of 26:28 in the 8K run.
The U.S. junior men took ninth overall.
Ethiopia won both the men's and women's junior team titles, while the Ethiopian men also took the senior team title and Kenya won the senior women's title.
Team USA finished fifth on both the men's and women's side of the senior races, and former Cowboy All-American Shadrack Kipchirchir finished 21st for the U.S. as the third-best finishing American man in the race.
Men's DMR, OSU Milers Take First-Team All-America
Six members of the Oklahoma State track and field program took home first-team All-America honors at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships with seniors Josh Thompson and Kaela Edwards earning individual honors and Craig Nowak, Brandon Singleton, Bradley Johnson and Hassan Abdi earning the honor as a member of the distance medley relay team.
Thompson finished sixth in the men's mile, while Edwards finished fourth in the women's mile.
It was Thompson's first individual honor as a Cowboy as he finished fifth with the Cowboy DMR team a season ago.
For Edwards, the honor gave her five first-team and six overall heading into her final outdoor season. The Cowgirl senior is OSU's highest scoring woman ever at Indoor Championship events with 29 points.
Dave Smith's Cowboys advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the distance medley relay for the fifth-straight season and earned first-team honors for the third time in that span behind a spirited effort from Abdi in the mile leg, who was only added to the quartet earlier in the week.
Overall, the Cowboys finished 30th and the Cowgirls took 39th.
