STILLWATER ---- Oklahoma State softball's Madi Sue Montgomery's walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh secured a 5-4 victory over Central Arkansas on Tuesday at Cowgirl Stadium. The win equaled last season's regular-season win total at 29 for the Cowgirls.
Â
Brandi Needham (16-5) earned the win in the circle as she pitched the final two outs of the seventh in relief of Logan Simunek. Simunek finished with a career-high six innings pitched in the game.
Â
"Good game obviously for us," Oklahoma State head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "These are games that you have to win. Our sights' obviously set for postseason play, and these are games that you have to win. And you have to figure out ways to win games when you're just not quite as sharp. I thought we were really good early. I thought Logan threw the ball well. I'm just happy with the way we were able to jump out ahead, then lose it and get it back. Just a good all around game."
Â
Oklahoma State (29-16 Overall, 8-1 Big 12) started the scoring effort in the bottom of the first with Vanessa Shippy and Kristin Reasnor RBIs to take a 2-0 lead after one.
Â
The Cowgirls continued the offensive output in the bottom of the second with a Rylee Bayless single to score Montgomery and give OSU a 3-0 lead. OSU added a fourth run in the bottom of the fourth via a Shippy RBI double to score Taylor Lynch.
Â
UCA (17-30) mounted a comeback effort in the top of the fifth with four runs to tie the game at 4-4 before Montgomery's eventual game-winning hit in the seventh.
Â
Montgomery shined at the plate going 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI hit. Shippy finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Bayless went 3-for-4 and Lynch went 2-for-4.
Â
"It feels pretty good just to win," Montgomery said. "We didn't play as well as we could have, but we took care of it at the end. That's all that matters."
Â
Simunek earned her fifth career start. She went six innings where she allowed just one run on three hits.
