Cowgirls Take Season-High Win Streak To Four With Two Wins
March 04, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER, Okla. ---- Oklahoma State Softball swept a doubleheader Saturday in the Mizuno Classic and extended its winning streak to a season-high four games at Cowgirl Stadium. The Cowgirls defeated Tennessee Tech, 3-2, and beat Abilene Christian, 9-2, in the second game.
Â
The Cowgirls blasted two home runs on the day to propel themselves to the two victories.
Â
"That's probably our best run that we've had," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I thought Shea Coats was really good. Probably the best Shea has thrown. We just have to keep building these kids' strength and their mentality. I was very excited for the way Biggerstaff threw. It was probably the best she's thrown here. Two great days for two kids that have been struggling and needed those days. I thought our at-bats were a lot better all day long. "
Â
The Cowgirls (12-8) got things started early against Tennessee Tech. Â Mackenzie Thomas homered to left and gave OSU a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Â The home run was her first at OSU and just her second career hit. Â Taylor Lynch delivered later in the inning with a two-out RBI single to score Rylee Bayless and extend the lead to 2-0.
Â
Oklahoma State scored its third run in the bottom of the fifth. Â Alex Edinger scored from third on a throwing error by the catcher, who was attempting to throw out Vanessa Shippy at second.
Â
The Cowgirls led 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning. Â
Â
Tennessee Tech hit a two-run home run in the last inning but Whitney Whitehorn came on in relief to shut down the comeback.  Whitehorn earned the save in 0.2 innings of work while allowing zero hits. The Cowgirls held on for the 3-2 victory.Â
Â
Thomas led the way offensively for OSU going 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Edinger also shined at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run.
Â
"It was just nice knowing my teammates had my back, so I could go up there and be loose," Thomas said. "And it was a great feeling knowing they were waiting on me at the plate and seeing everyone go crazy. It was real exciting. I actually thought it was going to hit the top of the wall and I almost fell down when I took off."
Â
Coats (1-2) earned her first win of the year in 6.1 innings of action while allowing just four hits and striking out nine.
Â
The second game of the day was never in doubt as the Cowgirls jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after two innings.
Â
ACU got one back in the fourth with an RBI single and another in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-2.
Â
Oklahoma State responded with a three-run inning in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-2. Â Edinger scored from third on an ACU error, and Lynch and Kristin Reasnor delivered RBI singles.
Â
Lynch led the way at the plate for OSU going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Alongside Lynch, Reasnor went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Â
Christina Biggerstaff (1-0) earned the win for the Cowgirls in six innings of work. Â She allowed only two runs on eight hits and had three strikeouts.
Â
Bayless reached safely in both games and has now got on-base in all 20 games this year for the Cowgirls.
