STILLWATER – Tyler Buffett tossed the first complete game of his career Friday night to carry Oklahoma State to its first Big 12 Conference win of the season with a 3-2 triumph over West Virginia at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win snapped the 23rd-ranked Cowboys' three-game losing streak as they improved to 16-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play. West Virginia is now 13-10 and 2-2 in the league.
Buffett dominated a WVU team that entered the game second in the Big 12 in hitting as the senior right-hander allowed only one earned run on four hits. He tied a career high with seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
The first complete game of Buffett's career came in his 77th appearance, which ranks fourth on OSU's all-time list, and his 25th career start.
OSU took the game's initial lead in its first at bat. Ryan Sluder led off the bottom of the first with a single and following a sacrifice bunt, Garrett Benge chopped an RBI double over the WVU first baseman to put the Cowboys up, 1-0.
The Mountaineers plated their lone runs against Buffett in the fifth to take the lead.
Following a leadoff single, error and bunt single, WVU had the bases loaded with no outs. Two-straight RBI groundouts gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage before a third consecutive groundout helped Buffett escape further damage.
The sixth inning proved to be the decisive frame. Cameron Dobbs got things started for the Cowboys with a single, and up next, Benge drew a walk. That brought Garrett McCain to the plate and after bunting a ball foul, he squared to bunt again before pulling the bat back and slashing an RBI single through the infield to tie the score at 2-2.
The score didn't remain even for long as Colin Simpson followed McCain with a go-ahead single through the right side to give OSU a 3-2 lead.
That was all Buffett needed as he retired 12-straight batters over the final four innings, including striking out the side in the eighth, to improve to 4-2 on the season.
The two teams return to action Saturday in a game rescheduled to start at 1 p.m.
