Cowgirls Battle To 2-2 Draw In Memphis
September 16, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Oklahoma State led Memphis late but couldn't hold on for the victory Friday night as, after 110 minutes of action, the match ended in a 2-2 tie at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Â
The result saw the Cowgirls extend their unbeaten streak to three matches as OSU is now 4-3-2 on the season, while Memphis owns a 5-2-1 mark.
Â
All four goals in the match came in the second half, with OSU getting on the scoreboard first in the 56th minute. Both of the Cowgirls' scores would come off corner kicks, and the first came when Christina Jean-Charles delivered a ball into the box that Elise Hawn headed into the back of the net for her first-career goal.
Â
Memphis recorded the equalizer in the 69th minute. After being awarded a penalty kick, Jessica Lisi stepped up and buried the attempt to make it 1-1.
Â
Just 10 minutes later, OSU went back on top. This time it was Jean-Charles on the receiving end of a Julia Lenhardt corner kick, with the senior defender heading the ball past UM goalie Marys Bard-Martel to put the visitors up, 2-1.
Â
The Cowgirls could not hold onto the lead, however. With just under six minutes remaining, Stasia Mallin lofted the ball high towards the OSU goal, where keeper Michela Ongaro fumbled it off the crossbar. Valerie Sanderson was there to convert the mistake and send it in for her seventh goal of the season to tie the score at 2-2.
Â
During the extra time, both teams managed three shots, with the most dangerous attempts coming in the second 10-minute overtime period. The first of those came from OSU when Holly Brehmer sent a ball into the box to Jaci Jones, whose shot sailed just inches over the crossbar.
Â
With just 58 seconds remaining, Ongaro denied a chance for the Tigers when she dove to her right to knock away a blast by Sanderson. The save was one of a career-high nine in the match for OSU's junior goalie.
Â
OSU returns to action Sunday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
