Freeze Throws Complete Game In Win Over Wichita State
March 23, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
Wichita, Kan.---- Kacy Freeze pitched her second-consecutive complete game in an 8-2 win over Wichita State on Wednesday night at Wilkins Stadium.
Freeze did not allow a hit in the final three innings and kept the Shockers on their heels, mixing up speeds with her newly found floating change up.
"I learned it last week," She said. "I threw it in a game and it worked well. We're going to continue working it into our pitches in the circle just to give hitters a different speed look. So it helps to keep them off my speed."
The win moved her to 8-5 on the season, and 4-1 in her last five starts dating back to the previous week.
"I think I've been focusing on getting shorter innings," She said. "It helps the defense stay in it and they were backing us up and making the routine plays."
Offensively the first three batters in the lineup, Vanessa Shippy, Taylor Lynch and Tiffany Mikkelson, led the Cowgirls. The trio went eight-for-11 with six RBIs.
Mikkelson led the charge for the group; her six RBIs tied her own OSU record for RBIs in a game.
The Cowgirls fell behind early when Wichita State took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Oklahoma State responded quickly and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third thanks to a pair of RBIs.
The Shockers scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, but the scoreboard would change an inning later when Mikkelson stepped up to the plate. She blasted a shot over the center field fence to give the Cowgirls a 5-2 lead before Oklahoma State added three more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
The win sealed the second-consecutive series win after the Cowgirls won the series against Houston on the road the past weekend.
"It's big," Coach Kenny Gajeweski said. "For us, every win is big. We had great efforts from Shippy, from Lynch, from Mikkelson. She had a big night and continues to have some good at bats. I think she's finally starting to hit her groove. It's fun to really watch her play."
The Cowgirls had a pair of streaks continue as well. Lynch moved her hit streak to 10 games, while Shippy got on base for her 24th-consecutive game.
"I try to take the same approach no matter what situation I'm in," Lynch said. "I just try to keep my routine the same. Your routine can't slump."
Oklahoma State now looks ahead to a home double series against Ole Miss on Friday.
"I think this team's in a good spot," Gajewski said. We've really come together well. We're rallying around each other. I just told them, I'm really proud to be your coach. Just watching them in the dugout before games, the energy has been awesome."
