Cowgirls Sweep Ole Miss Doubleheader
March 25, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
The Cowgirls won the first game of the night 9-6, and followed it up with an 8-6 win. Oklahoma State has now won 12 of its past 14 games dating back to a Mar.1 win against Arkansas.
"We're really pumped (about the wins)," Kacy Freeze said. "Especially going into conference. The team pulled through, even when we were behind. There weren't any signs of giving up so we're really pumped going into conference play."
The Cowgirls found themselves in trouble late in the second game when Ole Miss took a 6-5 in the top of the fourth, but they responded quickly and well to not let the game get away. Oklahoma State scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-6 lead thanks to a Maddi Sue Montgomery RBI.
Vanessa Shippy's RBI double the next inning gave the Pokes their eventual 8-6 lead that Freeze wouldn't surrender in the circle.
The first game was a home run show for Oklahoma State. Montgomery started the show in the second inning with a powerful shot over the center field fence to tie the game at 1-1.
The Cowgirls didn't wait long for the next, as Tiffany Mikkelson blasted a shot over the left field fence to give Oklahoma State a 3-1 lead. A Montgomery RBI double followed with a Darcy Taylor RBI double gave the Pokes a 5-1 lead after three innings.
Ole Miss scored four runs in the top half of the fourth inning, but Shippy's home run over the left field fence gave Oklahoma State a 7-4 lead after four.
A Taylor home run in the bottom of the fifth gave the Pokes their eventual 9-6 lead that Freeze came in to preserve with the save.
"I feel good," Oklahoma State coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Anytime you can beat a quality team (it feels good). We pitched well, had some big hits. I'm just happy with the way were executing."
A couple of notable streaks continued for Oklahoma State. Taylor Lynch continued her hit streak to a team-season high 12 games. Lynch is now batting .412 on the season with 15 RBIs.
The other notable streak that continued came from Shippy. She continued her streak of getting on base to 25 games.
Freeze was the star of the night in the circle. Her save in the first game and win in the second improved her record to 9-5 on the season.
