Cowboys Clinch Fifth-Straight Bedlam Series
May 02, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma State got a complete game performance from Michael Freeman to lift the 11th-ranked Cowboys to a Bedlam Series-clinching 8-1 win over No. 25 Oklahoma Saturday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. With the win, OSU improved to 31-14 overall and 14-6 in Big 12 Conference play, where the Cowboys have won six league series this season.
The victory was also OSU's fifth in a row over its in-state rival, including three this season, and the Cowboys have won five consecutive Bedlam Series dating back to 2011.
The OSU battery of Freeman and Bryan Case was a big reason for Saturday's win. Freeman hurled his third complete game of the season, racking up seven strikeouts and improving to 8-2, while Case tied career-highs with three hits and three RBIs.
"It was an extremely well-pitched game by Mike (Freeman), great effort by him, and our defense behind him was excellent," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday, who owns a 10-3 coaching mark against the Sooners. "(Case) did a really good job working with Mike and creating a good tempo in the middle innings. The double plays were obviously big, and we had some clutch hits, Bryan Case in particular....
"It was an excellent ballgame. It always starts on the mound, and when (Freeman) pitches, he has a confidence about himself that our team feels and you can just see him build as the game goes on."
OU (29-21, 10-7) plated its only run it its first at bat despite not collecting a hit. Following a walk, a stolen base, another walk and a passed ball, Kolbey Carpenter brought home that run on a fielder's choice. But Freeman escaped further damage by getting another groundout and a strikeout to end the inning.

The Cowboys quickly erased their deficit against OU starter Alec Hansen. After back-to-back, one-out singles by Tim Arakawa and Ryan Sluder in the top of the second, Case stepped to plate and smashed a two-RBI triple to left field to put OSU up, 2-1. Up next, Jacob Chappell delivered an RBI to extend the lead to two.
In the fourth, the Cowboys used one of their patented two-out rallies to broaden the gap between them and the Sooners. Case got things started with a two-out double, and consecutive walks to Chappell and Gage Green loaded the bases. That brought up Corey Hassel, who sent a two-RBI single through the left side to make the score 5-1.
That was more than enough for Freeman as the senior southpaw settled in and dominated the OU lineup to continue his impressive season.
"I've just really gotten more comfortable with what I'm doing, just worked hard and stuck with it," said Freeman, who pitched just 14 1/3 innings in 10 appearances last season. "There have been some tough times, but I've stuck with everything I was doing. And the plays that the guys are making behind me helping me keep the pitch count down and then scoring runs - it's a lot easier to pitch when you can trust all the guys at the plate and out in the field."
Freeman threw 119 pitches against the Sooners, and while he walked four, he allowed only five hits, all of them singles. He also induced ground ball three double plays.
"It's fun to watch the swings guys try and put on some of his pitches," Case said. "He's got so much movement. It's hard to hit, it's hard to catch - it's nasty."
OSU's offense finished with 12 hits in the contest, with Case and Hassel lead the way with three apiece.
The Cowboys will play for a series sweep beginning Sunday at 4 p.m.
