Cowboys Clinch Series Win At Michigan
May 15, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
A six-run sixth inning highlighted the OSU win, which was the Cowboys' third in a row and saw them improve to 34-16 on the season. The victory was also the Pokes' 15th come-from-behind triumph of the year.
Trey Cobb worked 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win on the mound Friday, and Gage Green, Donnie Walton and Dustin Williams each collected two RBIs for a Cowboys' lineup that also had five players record multiple hits.
"Our team showed some toughness tonight," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "The strength of who we are is the entirety of the group. When these guys are all put together, they really shine - they feed off each other, they complement one another and they all bring something to the table that's difficult to defend.
"We have a good lineup that's competing hard and finding ways to win, and they're doing it against good teams. I'm proud of the kids."
Michigan (32-23) took the game's early lead against OSU starter Jon Perrin when Jackson Glines sent a pitch down the right field line and over the wall for what was ruled a home run to give the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning.
That lead was short-lived, however, as in the top of the third, Walton crushed a two-run homer of his own off the scoreboard in right field to tie the score. The blast was Walton's third of the season.
The back-and-forth affair continued over the next three innings. UM regained the lead in the third before the Cowboys once again tied it up at 3-3 in the fourth when Green picked up an RBI on a successful squeeze bunt that scored Kevin Bradley, who led off the frame with a double.
OSU took a 4-3 lead with an unearned run in the fifth, but the Wolverines scored twice in the bottom of the inning off Cowboy reliever Garrett Williams, getting RBIs from Carmen Benedetti and Cody Bruder, to go back up by a run.
Once again, OSU would answer, and Holliday's ballclub would do it in a big way.
In the sixth, the Cowboys sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six times on four hits, all singles, while also taking advantage of four walks. Williams and Bryan Case each collected RBI walks in the inning, while Bradley, Chappell and Corey Hassel drove in runs with singles and Green brought home another with an RBI fielder's choice.
The big inning gave OSU a 10-5 lead from which the home team never recovered as Cobb stymied the Wolverines' offense the rest of the way. The sophomore right-hander scattered four hits and struck out three over the final 4 1/3 as he improved to 3-1 on the season.
"Other than the offensive relentlessness that we showed, Trey Cobb's relief outing was the story of the game; Trey pitched awfully good," Holliday said.
Williams led an OSU offensive attack that collected 12 hits and drew 11 walks as he was 2-for-2 at the plate and racked up a career-high four walks. Walton, Green, and Bradley were all 2-for-4.The series will conclude Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST).
