Cowboys' Winning Streak Reaches Six
March 17, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State recorded its season-best sixth consecutive win Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over Central Arkansas at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the win, the 19th-ranked Cowboys snapped UCA's eight-game winning streak and improved to 14-6 heading into Friday's Big 12 Conference opener, where they begin defense of their league title at top-ranked TCU.
OSU continued to ride the arms of its pitching staff in Tuesday's win, with Remey Reed picking up the win on the mound in his first-career start. The sophomore right-hander worked six innings and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out three to improve to 2-0.
The Cowboys provided Reed with just enough run support as Garrett McCain, Gage Green and Corey Hassel each collected RBIs.
"It was a great ballgame," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "Central Arkansas is a good team; they are highly competitive. We pitched exceptionally well, played good defense and had just enough hits to sneak out a win against a quality opponent. I'm proud of Remey Reed in his first start, he handled it extremely well, and our bullpen continues to do a great job.
"I'm excited about the fact that we're finding ways to win games like that, and I'm encouraged about the progress that we can still make and hopefully elevate our team as we move forward."
Both starting pitchers were in control early as UCA's Dillon Drabble matched Reed's scoreless effort until the fourth. In that inning, the Bears' righty retired the first two OSU hitters but then gave up a single to Dustin Williams. After Ryan Sluder reached on an error and Jacob Chappell walked to load the bases, McCain was hit by a pitch to give the Cowboys a 1-0 lead.
OSU doubled its lead in the fifth. Following a one-out single and a stolen base by Conor Costello, Kevin Bradley delivered a base hit to put Cowboys on the corners. Hassel then laid down a perfect bunt that resulted in an RBI single as the home team took a 2-0 advantage.
The Bears (11-4) plated their lone run in the sixth, trimming OSU's lead to 2-1 on an RBI single by Nate Ferrell.
But UCA would not score again. Following Reed's outing, Tyler Nurdin, Trey Cobb and Koda Glover came on and kept the Bears off the scoreboard over the final three innings, and Green provided a key insurance run with a two-out RBI single in the eighth to help seal the win.
The visitors would make things interesting in the ninth off Glover, getting a one-out single from Ferrell to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. But the Cowboys' closer retired the next two hitters on fly outs to notch his fourth save of the season.
OSU opens its series at TCU Friday at 6:30 p.m. The two teams will also square off Saturday at 6:30 p.m. before closing out the series Sunday at 2 p.m.
