The Best Of 2015 Cowboy Baseball: Back To The Finals
December 03, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
The 2015 season added to the long and storied history of Oklahoma State baseball, with the list of Cowboy accomplishments under third-year head coach Josh Holliday a long one. We're looking back at some of the most memorable moments and impressive feats turned in by the '15 ballclub, and today we celebrate what has become a recent postseason trend for the Cowboys.
Cowboys Advance To Big 12 Championship Title Game For Second Consecutive Year
Coaches always want their team to be playing some of its best baseball in the postseason, and OSU continued to do that at the Big 12 Conference Baseball Championship in 2015.
A year after reaching the finals of the tourney, the Cowboys made a return to the championship game after sweeping through their half of the bracket at ONEOK Field in Tulsa.
As the tourney's No. 2 seed, OSU opened with a 3-0 win over West Virginia, with Conor Costello and Trey Cobb combining for the shutout on the mound. Dustin Williams and Donnie Walton each delivered solo home runs, with Walton also driving in a run on a single.
Cobb was outstanding, retiring all 15 Mountaineers he faced in a perfect final five innings and not allowing a single batted ball to leave the infield.
OSU continued its dominance against its next opponent, Kansas State, handing the Wildcats a 10-1 loss. Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Michael Freeman picked up his 10th win of the season with a complete game effort in which he struck out seven.
The Cowboys scored five runs in the first two innings to take control, and Walton, Tim Arakawa, Ryan Sluder and Jacob Chappell each collected multiple RBIs.
A Bedlam showdown would be next and just as it had done three times during the regular season, OSU emerged victorious against its rival as the Pokes claimed a 5-1 win.
Walton and Williams continued their offensive assault from the middle of the order, combining for five hits in eight at-bats, and Jon Perrin notched his sixth win of the season after allowing just one run in six innings of work.
The Bedlam win sent OSU to the championship game against Texas, but for the second-straight year, the Cowboys fell just short of bringing home the trophy.
OSU took a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning, but three costly errors led to five unearned runs for the Longhorns in the top of the eighth and spelled doom for the Cowboys in a 6-3 loss.
