STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State jumped out to a four-goal lead and never looked back as the 18th-ranked Cowgirls topped Murray State, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Junior Krista Lopez recorded a pair of goals for the Cowgirls, who outshot the visitors by a 33-6 margin and improved to 4-1-0 on the season.
“For 70 minutes, we were really good, up 4-0 and it could have been more,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “Then we emptied the bench and gave some kids an opportunity to show what they could do and rest some of our starters.
“The result was never in doubt, and it was a learning experience for some of our young players off the bench and they needed that opportunity.”
Lopez helped put the Cowgirls in control early as she notched her second goal of the season just under 16 minutes into the match to put OSU up by a 1-0 count.
The Cowgirls added to their lead in the 28th minute compliments of an own goal as MSU's Audrey Wilson misfired trying to clear the ball and put it in the back of the Racers' net to give OSU a two-goal advantage.
OSU would push that lead to 3-0 by halftime as Katie Richardson netted her first goal of the season in the 41st minute on a 12-yard blast past MSU goalie Tara Isbell.
The lead grew again early in the second half, and it was another unassisted goal by Lopez that gave OSU a 4-0 cushion at the 52:11 mark.
Sunday marked the first-career, multi-goal game for Lopez, who also had the game winner against No. 13 Memphis on Friday night.
“We called (Lopez) out and said she had to produce more and credit to the kid, she stepped up this weekend,” Carmichael said. “Hopefully, this gives her the confidence to carry that on the rest of the year.”
The Racers (1-3-2) would finally get on the scoreboard in the 80th minute, well after the day had ended for most of the OSU starters, and they notched their second goal with just over three minutes remaining to cut their final deficit in half.
OSU returns to action this week with a pair of road games as the Cowgirls take on SMU Friday night before a Sunday contest at TCU.
