STILLWATER, Okla. – Krista Lopez scored both Oklahoma State goals Sunday afternoon to lead the 12th-ranked Cowgirls to a 2-0 win over Texas Tech at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
With the win, OSU ran its unbeaten streak to eight matches and improved to 9-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in Big 12 Conference play.
The Cowgirls outshot TTU by a 23-6 margin, and sophomore goalie AD Franch recorded her fifth shutout of the season as OSU dropped the Red Raiders to 8-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.
“We played great,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “We talked about how disappointed we were in our performance Friday (vs. Baylor) even though we won. Today, we wanted to make a statement that (Friday vs. BU) was one bad game as opposed to something that's gonna be permanent.
“We talked about what we needed to do better. The kids played great, and I thought everybody played really well. Tech is a good team, and we made them look pretty average at times.”
OSU wasted little time taking control of the scoreboard as Lopez notched her first goal less than six minutes into the match.
The goal was set up by a beautiful diagonal cross from Kyndall Treadwell, who found Lopez on the near side for a shot from 10-yards out that she drilled past TTU goalie Colleen Pitts.
OSU had several other prime scoring opportunities before intermission as the Cowgirls outshot the visitors by a 16-3 count in the opening half. But Pitts recorded six of her eight saves in the first half, including a diving stop on a Whitney Wernimont free kick in the 33rd minute.
The Cowgirls clung to the 1-0 lead for much of the second half until another outstanding pass led to a Lopez goal. This time, the long cross came from Taylor Mathews, and Lopez connected on a left-footed shot from 16-yards out that found the back of the net.
“Kyndall and Taylor should get a lot of the credit for the goals I had,” Lopez said. “During practice, (Carmichael) told us that on the opposite side the other defender is not going to be ready for that ball across or through. We've been practicing on that, and we finally got it to work in a game.”
Lopez' effort against Tech marked the junior's third multi-goal game of the season and upped her team-leading goal total to nine.
“We're really pleased with (Lopez') performance, and the way she's playing right now, she's as good a forward as there is in the conference,” Carmichael said.
Franch finished with four saves, including a leaping deflection of a long shot from Tiffini Smith in the 69th minute that kept the Red Raiders from recording the equalizer.
OSU returns to action Friday when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to take on Missouri.
