COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Oklahoma State and Colorado College battled for 110 minutes Sunday at Stewart Field, but in the end, neither team could manage a goal as the match ended in a 0-0 tie.
The 13th-ranked Cowgirls were able to extend their unbeaten streak to six games and will enter Big 12 Conference play this week with a 7-1-1 mark.
Both goalkeepers turned in superb efforts, with OSU's AD Franch tying a season high with seven saves and recording her fourth shutout of the year. CC's Caitlin Hulyo was equally strong as she racked up a season-best 12 saves.
OSU outshot the Tigers by a 24-21 margin, with 12 of those shots on goal. The Cowgirls had a 5-2 advantage in shots in the final overtime period.
“I was really pleased with the effort and commitment of our team,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “The girls dug very deep under adverse conditions and played a very strong game. Maybe on a different day, things could have worked out differently in our favor.
“Colorado College is a great team that is very difficult to beat at home. We have a lot of respect for them, and their kids played a very good game as well. It was just a great match.”
In the opening half, both teams recorded six shots and each had several strong scoring opportunities.
The Cowgirls' best chances came early. Just over five minutes into the match, a blast off the foot of Kyndall Treadwell from 25-yards out caromed off the crossbar, and Megan Marchesano's follow header was saved by Hulyo.
CC (4-1-3) just missed taking the lead with a pair of shots in the 35th minute. Off a free kick, Brittney Lyman delivered a shot from the box that was saved by Franch, and on the ensuing scramble for possession, Lauren Digregorio's shot was saved off the line by a Cowgirl defender to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
The Tigers had two near misses in the opening 10 minutes of the second half but were once again unable to convert. Franch made a diving save on a free kick from 25-yards out by Madison Whitehead to deny the home team in the 50th minute, and less than three minutes later, a shot off the foot of Tiffany Brown glanced off the crossbar.
Hulyo would keep the Cowgirls off the scoreboard with a save in the 73rd minute as she elevated to snag a blast from 20-yards out by Katie Richardson.
With just 7:21 remaining in regulation, Hulyo thwarted perhaps OSU's best chance of the day as she dove and deflected a shot by Krista Lopez from just outside the box.
In the first overtime period, Franch continued the back-and-forth display of stellar saves as she leapt and deflected a 20-yard blast by Brown over the crossbar.
The second overtime provided OSU several more scoring opportunities, the first coming on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box. But again the Cowgirls were denied by Hulyo, who dove to her right to save the shot by Taylor Mathews.
OSU's list of near misses continued with 5:45 left. Kristen Kelley sent a cross into the box where a streaking Whitney Wernimont delivered a shot that hit off the bottom of the crossbar and bounced away.
The game's final play continued the dramatics as with just one tick remaining on the clock, CC's Hannah Peterson blasted a shot the sailed just wide of the goal.
The Cowgirls return to action Friday when they open Big 12 play against Baylor in Stillwater.
