PORTLAND, Ore. - Third-ranked Portland scored in the final minute to knock off No. 19 Oklahoma State, 1-0, Sunday in front of 3,058 fans at Merlo Field.
Keelin Winters headed a free kick past Cowgirl goalie AD Franch with just 42 seconds remaining in the match to lift Portland to the win.
Playing without two of its top offensive threats in senior Annika Niemeier and junior Kyndall Treadwell, OSU saw its 12-game unbeaten streak come to an end as the Cowgirls fell to 2-1-0 on the season. UP improved to 4-0-0 with the win.
OSU was on the defensive most of the opening half as Portland outshot the Cowgirls, 12-2, but Franch kept the Pilots off the scoreboard with four saves.
OSU's best scoring chance in the first half came on a free kick from 35 yards out by Taylor Mathews. But Mathews' shot was saved by a diving Erin Dees.
Franch made several impressive saves on the day and finished with seven in the match.
With just over five minutes remaining in the opening half, Franch came out of the box to deflect a shot by Michelle Cruz, and seconds later, Elli Reed hit the far post with a shot, barely missing a goal.
After battling to a scoreless draw in the first half, the Cowgirls had a prime scoring opportunity just out of the halftime locker room, but Dees came out of the box to make an impressive save on a shot off the foot of Katie Richardson and keep the game scoreless.
OSU also had a chance with just over 29 minutes remaining, but Krista Lopez barely missed connecting on a cross in the box from Sarah Brown.
Portland outshot the visitors by a 19-3 margin in the match.
OSU returns to action Friday night when the Cowgirls host nationally ranked Memphis in Stillwater.
