Cowboys Slug Way To Pair Of Wins
March 15, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State bashed seven home runs Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium en route to a pair of wins as the 11th-ranked Cowboys topped Rhode Island, 14-2, before earning a come-from-behind 10-6 victory over No. 6 Cal State Fullerton.
With the wins, the Cowboys improved to 13-3 on the season, including a 6-1 mark on their home field.
In a Saturday night showdown between two of the nation's top-ranked teams, OSU used a five-run sixth inning to snap Cal State Fullerton's 11-game winning streak.
The Titans (12-3) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring a run in the first and plating two more in the second on a home run by Nick Ramirez and an RBI fielder's choice by Christian Colon.
OSU trimmed its deficit to 3-2 in the third when Micheal Dabbs delivered a two-run home run over the right field wall, his third homer of the season.
CS Fullerton answered in its next at bat, scoring twice on four hits off OSU starter Tyler Lyons.
The Cowboys pulled to within 5-3 with a run in the fifth on Davis Duren's sacrifice fly, but once again CSF answered in the top of the next inning to take a three-run lead.
But the visitors would not stay on top for long. Doug Kroll led off the bottom of the pivotal sixth inning with a double, and after CSF catcher Dustin Garneau dropped a foul pop off the bat of Neil Medchill, the Cowboy junior made the Titans pay. Medchill blasted the next pitch from Kyle Witten over the wall in right-center field to make the score 6-5 and jump start an OSU rally.
Following Medchill's homer, Dean Green singled. Eric Walker failed to bunt Green over but reached on a fielder's choice to bring up Tyrone Hambly. And Hambly came through with his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to left that gave OSU its first lead of the contest at 7-6.
The Cowboys weren't done as they added their eighth run on an RBI double by Duren, which brought home Dabbs to make the score 8-6.
In the eighth, OSU took advantage of two Titan errors to add a pair of insurance runs. With two outs, Tom Belza's double to left field plated two runs to push OSU's lead to 10-6.
OSU closer Randy McCurry came on in a non-save situation in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the side to seal the win for the Cowboys.
Lyons earned the win with an eight-inning effort to improve to 3-0 on the season. The junior southpaw has won 13-straight decisions dating back to last year.
Four Cowboys  Dabbs, Belza, Medchill and Hambly  each finished with two RBIs in the win.
OSU opened Saturday with a convincing win over Rhode Island (7-4) as Tyler Blandford had a career day on the mound for the Cowboys.
A junior right hander, Blandford left just one out shy of his first-career complete game as he improved to 3-0 on the season. He racked up a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed only one walk while surrendering just two runs on seven hits.
URI took an early 1-0 lead in its first at bat on an RBI single by Jeff Cammans, but the Cowboys tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Dabbs scored on a wild pitch.
The Cowboys took the lead in the second on a solo homer by Medchill and took command of the game with a six-run rally in the fourth. Belza led off the pivotal frame with a homer, and two batters later, Medchill delivered his second round tripper of the game to give OSU a 3-1 lead. Hambly and Dabbs each had RBIs in the frame, and Kevin David brought home a pair of runs with a triple.
OSU added three runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth, with the eighth inning highlighted by Duren's first-career home run.
Dabbs, David and Medchill each finished with three hits against the Rams, and David and Medchill had three RBIs apiece.
The Cowboys close out the weekend Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Rhode Island.
