Storylines
Week Two of the 2006 college football season will find the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road as they face the Arkansas State Indians Saturday night. The game will take place in Little Rocks War Memorial Stadium instead of the ASU campus in Jonesboro.
Both teams are coming off of impressive season-opening wins. The Cowboys scored early, often and in a variety of ways in a 52-10 win over Missouri State.
The Indians avenged a lopsided 2005 loss to Army with a 14-6 home decision Saturday night. It marks their first season-opening victory since 1995.
The Cowboys will be looking to go 2-0 for the second straight season under Mike Gundy and for the third straight season overall. The Cowboys will be getting their first look at something they will see a lot of in the coming weeks -- the road. OSU has just one game at Boone Pickens Stadium between Sept. 2 and Oct. 21st when they host Texas A&M for Homecoming.
During that span, the Cowboys will play four of their five games on the road, with an off-week scheduled for Sept. 30th.
Good Start
The Oklahoma State Cowboys will be looking for a 2-0 start Saturday night in Little Rock. The Pokes have started 2-0 each of the past two seasons and four times since 1999. Oklahoma State has not started 2-0 in three consecutive seasons since the 1983, 1984 and 1985 teams began their campaigns with at least two straight victories.
Sweet September
The victory over Missouri State improved Oklahoma State to 4-0 in September games under Mike Gundy. In fact, the Cowboys have now won 11 straight games in September, dating back to a 2002 loss to UCLA.
Streaking Against The World
The Cowboys have won 12 straight games against non-league opponents, including a 4-0 mark under Mike Gundy. The last loss to a non-Big 12 foe in the regular season came on Sept. 14, 2002, when No. 23 UCLA knocked off the Cowboys in Stillwater, 38-24. The 12 straight non-conference wins represent the longest streak by the Cowboys since the program won 12 straight non-conference games (14 if counting bowl wins) from 1983 through the 1985 non-conference seasons. That 1980s streak, which was achieved by head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Pat Jones, included road victories at Texas A&M, Arizona State and Washington.
A Win On Saturday Would Mean...
If the Cowboys are able to win Saturday night in Little Rock, the 13th straight non-league win make history at OSU. The school has never won 13 straight non-conference football games during the regular season. However, OSU would need to win each of its two remaining non-Big 12 games to reach the overall record of 14 straight out-of-conference victories (includling bowl games).
First Of The Rematches
The Arkansas State game marks the first rematch from 2005 for the Cowboys. For Arkansas State, it will be a chance at revenge for the second straight game. The Indians took care of Army on Saturday night (14-6), to avenge a 38-10 loss from the previous season. OSU will face another rematch next week when Florida Atlantic visits Stillwater. The Cowboys won last season in Florida, 23-3.
