Mercer Named Freshman All-American By Louisville Slugger
June 08, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
Mercer was named to the team as a multiple-position athlete. The 6-foot-3, 180 pounder from Taloga, Okla. started 54 games at shortstop for the Cowboys in 2006 and also made 12 appearances on the mound.
A slick-fielding shortstop, Mercer hit .270 with six home runs and 24 RBIs and also stole seven bases on seven attempts. On the mound, the right hander established himself as the Cowboys' closer and compiled a 5-0 record and a team-high five saves. In 19 innings of work, Mercer struck out 17 batters, and opponents hit just .212 against him.
Mercer, who was also named first-team All-Big 12 Conference as a utility player, is the second consecutive player from Oklahoma State to earn Freshman All- America honors from Louisville Slugger. Corey Brown earned that distinction in 2005.
