2003-04: Played two seasons at El Paso Community College ... helped lead his team to the conference title in both years ... received all-conference plaudits in 2004 ... went 7-4 with a 4.17 ERA as a sophomore with 75 strikeouts in 82 innings ... was drafted in the 48th round of the 2004 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates ... went 3-0 with a 6.75 ERA as a freshman with 33 strikeouts in 30.2 innings ... was drafted in the 28th round by the Colorado Rockies in 2003 ... played two seasons of summer ball with the Anchorage Glacierpilots ... went 1-3 with a 4.78 ERA in 2004 with 47 strikeouts in 52.2 innings ... went 3-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 2003 with 26 strikeouts in 52 innings ... also considered Texas, Texas Tech, TCU and Virginia among others.
HIGH SCHOOL: Was a first team all-city pick as a pitcher/shortstop/first baseman at J.M. Hanks High ... also earned all-city honors as the quarterback on the football team ... earned three letters in football and baseball.
