STILLWATER, Okla.-- Baylor continued its offensive surge, breaking open a 9-9 game, with seven runs in the eighth en route to a 16-11 win over Oklahoma State in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
The Bears had 16 hits on the day and improved to 25-13 overall and 8-6 in Big 12 play. OSU, with the loss, dropped its first conference series of the season and fell to 22-11 and 7-4 in league action.
"That's a hard fought game," said Oklahoma State head coach Tom Holliday. "For nine innings, that's the hardest we've fought all year long. And we had to. You can go only one direction right there. You have to fight (Sunday) like you fought for that last out today."
The Cowboys jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, two of the runs coming on a homer by centerfielder Jos? Virgil, his sixth of the year.
Baylor cut into the lead with a run in the second, while Oklahoma State added a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Virgil to make it 4-1.
The Bears tied the game in the fifth on a three-run homer by rightfielder David Murphy off of Cowboy starter Spencer Grogan.
Baylor knocked out Grogan in the sixth, scoring three more runs in the stanza to take a 7-4 lead. They added two more runs in the seventh to push the advantage to 9-4.
Josh Fields opened the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer to right field that ignited a Cowboy five-run rally to tie the game at 9-9. Designated Mario Matulich had a RBI groundout and right fielder Lyndsey Simmons had a two-run single in the rally.
Baylor quelled the Cowboy rally in the eighth by scoring seven runs and taking advantage of six walks and a hit batter.
The Cowboys closed the scoring out with two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Jos? Virgil. The Phoenix, Ariz., native finished the afternoon 4-for-6 with five RBIs and a run scored to lead OSU offensively. He also extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
