STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State completed the series sweep of Miami (Ohio) by taking both games of a doubleheader, 6-2 and 11-3, Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
OSU has now won seven straight games to move to 10-5 on the year while Miami dropped to 3-5.
The Cowboys broke open a scoreless contest in the fourth inning of game one with four runs in the fifth. Shortstop Chris Gutierrez had a RBI double and Jos? Virgil extended his hit streak to 14 games with a RBI single to stake the Pokes to a 4-0 lead.
Oklahoma State took advantage of two Miami errors in the seventh to plate two more runs and extend the lead to 6-0. First baseman John Urick knocked in one of the runs with a one-out single to right field.
Cowboy starter Spencer Grogan (1-1) pitched six shutout innings to pick up his first win in an OSU uniform. The sophomore southpaw allowed just three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
The RedHawks got on the board with a run in both the eighth and ninth innings off of reliever Joe Weaver who picked up his second save of the year. He pitched three innings, allowing one earned run while walking three. MU center fielder David Cook had a RBI single in the eighth and Ryan Edginton had a RBI ground out in the ninth to account for the scoring.
In the nightcap, Miami jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off of starter Jimmy Rhodes. OSU responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Cowboys took advantage of four base on balls by RedHawk pitchers in the stanza, a problem that plagued them the entire series. MU walked 23 batters in the the three game series, including eight in the final game.
Rhodes gave up a run in the second and was relieved by junior lefty Shane Hawk (2-0) who pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless ball. Hawk allowed just one hit while walking two and striking out five.
OSU scored a run in the third on a Gutierrez single and added two more in the fourth on a single by Urick to extend the lead to 7-3. Scott Kirby hit a solo homer in the fifth, his first in a Cowboy uniform, and Josh Fields hit a two-run triple, as the Pokes scored three more runs in the inning to take a 10-3 lead.
Urick added a solo homer in the eighth, his second of the year, to round out the scoring. He finished the game going 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. Jos? Virgil also had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, while Josh Fields and Chris Gutierrez aided the cause with two hits themselves.
The Cowboys will be back on the road next weekend to start a five-game spring break trip to North Carolina. OSU will open the skein with a 2 p.m. CT game against North Carolina State on Friday, March 14, at Durham Bulls Park.
