STILLWATER, Okla.- Oklahoma State broke open a 1-1 tie game with an eight-run fourth inning as the Cowboys rolled past Miami (Ohio) 12-1 in baseball action Friday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
Leftfielder Scott Kirby and designated hitter Mario Matulich had the big hits in the stanza, recording a three-run double and grand slam homer respectively.
The Cowboys won their fifth straight game to improve to 8-5 on the year while Miami fell to 3-3.
OSU got on the board in the first, courtesy of a RBI single by first baseman John Urick. Miami right fielder Michael Carlin tied the game in the second with a solo homer to left, his fourth of the year, off of starter Scott Baker.
It would be the only run the RedHawks would score as Baker (3-2) went seven innings and allowed just four hits with five strikeouts and no walks to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Oklahoma State scored a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to close out the scoring. Matulich led the Cowboys, going 1-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Kirby ended the afternoon 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored while centerfielder Jose Virgil extended his hit streak to 13 games with a RBI single in the fourth.
Freshman southpaw Thomas Cowley saw his first action of the year and pitched an inning of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.
Miami starter Chad Reineke (1-1) lasted only 3.1 innings and gave up four runs, three earned on two hits with four walks and a strikeout. Carlin was the leader offensively for the RedHawks with two hits.
The two teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1:30 p.m. PLEASE NOTE that this is a change from the original schedule which had the teams playing a single game on Saturday and Sunday. Due to forecasts of a cold front coming in on Saturday night, head coach Tom Holliday decided to make the move to a doubleheader.
