LAWRENCE, Kan.- Oklahoma State cruised past Kansas 16-6 with exceptional defense and a seven run eighth inning.
Jose Virgil hit two homeruns and drove in five, while Josh Fields connected on his first homerun of the season in the fourth.
Spencer Grogan went eight strong innings to improve to 2-3 on the season and got a lot from his defense. The Cowboys turned four double plays and Cory Von Tungeln and Lyndsey Simmons made extraordinary plays in the outfield. Tungeln made a sliding catch in foul ground in front of the wall down the right field line. Simmons made a diving catch in front of the center field wall with his back toward the infield.
OSU improved to 17-8 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12 while KU fell to 21-11 and 0-5 in conference play. The Cowboys clinched their second consecutive Big 12 series with the victory.
Jose Virgil connected for the Cowboys in the first on a two run blast to right center. Chris Gutierrez led off the game with a walk before Virgil's homerun.
The Cowboys extended the lead to four in the third when Scott Kirby connected on a two run single. The Cowboys loaded the bases on singles by Josh Fields, John Urick and Mario Matulich.
Kansas got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Ritchie Price drove in Matt Baty with an RBI single.
Don Czyz relieved Kansas starter Pat Holmes in the top of the fourth. He walked Brian Kraft and Gutierrez to start the inning before Josh Fields came up with one out and hit an opposite field shot for his first homerun of the season.
Casey Spanish answered with a solo shot over the backdrop in centerfield to make it 7-2.
The Cowboys scored two more in the sixth. Virgil and Urick reached base via the walk. Virgil stole third and scored on Jaramillo's RBI single. Urick moved to third on the play and scored on Mario Matulich's groundout.
The pokes strung together three consecutive hits in the eighth to chase Josh Duran from the game. Matulich drove in Urick to make the score 10-2. Scott Kirby hit a sacrifice fly to score Jaramillo. The Cowboys kept it going against Eric Peterson and used a seven run eighth to put the game out of reach. Pinch hitter Shawn Callahan had a two run single and Virgil had a three-run homerun to finish out the scoring for the Cowboys.
Kansas scored two times in both eighth and the ninth to make the final score 16-6.
The series will conclude against the Jayhawks tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.
