STILLWATER, Okla.- Junior catcher Jason Jaramillo had a career day in leading Oklahoma State past No. 8 Texas, 9-5, in baseball action Monday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
Jaramillo ripped three homers and knocked in seven runs in leading the Cowboys to the series clinching win over the Longhorns.
"We did have to win this game," said head coach Tom Holliday. We are at home in one of only four conference series in Stillwater and we had to have that one."
OSU improved to 14-8 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 while UT fell to 19-10 and 4-2 in conference play. It was the first series win over the defending national champion Longhorns since sweeping them in Stillwater in 1999.
The Cowboys jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, courtesy of a grand-slam homer by Jaramillo off of Texas starter Sam LeCure.
The Longhorns cut the lead in half in the top of the third with two two-out RBI singles by right fielder Dustin Majewski and first baseman Curtis Thigpen.
Jaramillo added his second homer of the game, a solo shot in the fifth to push the advantage to 5-2. UT would not quit however and rallied to tie the game at 5-5 with three solo homers in the sixth inning of off OSU starter Joe Weaver. Majewski, third baseman J.D. Reininger and catcher Taylor Teagarden all homered in the stanza.
The Cowboys took the lead back for good in the bottom of the sixth when first baseman John Urick laced a two-out double down the right field line scoring shortstop Chris Gutierrez, who led off the inning with a single to left.
The OSU pitching staff took over from there as relievers Shane Hawk and Daniel Rew closed out the game. Hawk gave up a leadoff triple to Tim Moss in the seventh but got out of the jam by recording three straight outs over the Longhorns' two through four hitters.
Then in the top of the eighth, UT loaded the bases with one out before Hawk struck out centerfielder Joe Ferin. Daniel Rew came into the game and induced Tim Moss to ground out to end the scoring threat.
OSU added a three-run cushion in its half of the eighth, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by centerfielder Jose Virgil and a two-run homer by Jaramillo.
Jaramillo, a Franksville, Wisc., native finished the day 3-for-4 with three homers and seven RBIs. He accounted for 11 of the Cowboys' 13 runs in the two wins.
Hawk picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief to improve to 5-0 on the year while Daniel Rew notched his second save of the series and third overall.
Urick went 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. He finished the three-game set going 8-for-12 with five runs scored.
The Cowboys will take on Texas-Arlington in a schedule switch tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Arlington, but was changed when the Texas series was pushed back. OSU will now travel to Arlington on April 22 to complete the home and home series. Season ticket holders are asked to bring ticket No. 21 (the original April 22 game date) to Tuesday's game.
