HOUSTON, Texas- Designated hitter Mario Matulich's three-run double in the first sparked a six-run inning as Oklahoma State defeated Nicholls State 17-1 in baseball action at Cougar Field.
The Cowboys wrapped out five hits in the first and scored another run in the second to take an early 7-0 advantage.
That would be all starter Scott Baker (2-2) would need as he allowed just one run in seven innings of work to pick up his second win of the year. He gave up six hits while allowing two walks and three strikeouts on the night.
Nicholls State scored its lone run of the game in the fifth, courtesy of a solo homer by leftfielder Brad Dantonio.
Oklahoma State added 10 runs in the eighth to close out the scoring in the game. Newcomers Colby Overstreet and Adam Yates saw their first action of the year in the stanza and both came through with base hits.
Second baseman Kenny Hansley led the team with three hits while Mario Matulich went 2-for-5 with four RBIs in the winning effort.
Colonel starter Robbie Hebert (2-1) took the loss, giving up seven runs, three earned, on eight hits in six innings of work.
With the win, OSU evened its record to 5-5 on the year while Nicholls State fell to 8-5. The two teams will face each other tomorrow at noon at Tomball High School. It will be the first of two contests for the Pokes, as they will take on Grambling immediately after game one.
