MESA, Ariz.-Leftfielder Ryan Olivo's two-run triple sparked a four-run second inning to lead Oklahoma State to a 7-4 win over Dayton Saturday afternoon at HoHoKam Park.
Oklahoma State evened its record at 3-3 on the season while Dayton fell to 0-3.
The Cowboys opened the scoring in the second with Olivo's triple followed by a RBI triple by Craig Bartosh and a RBI single by second baseman Kenny Hansley to give the Cowboys an early 4-0 advantage.
The Flyers scored a run in the fourth on a RBI single by first baseman Forrest Belcher and two more in the fifth on a single by left fielder Tom Beechem to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Cowboys added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by John Urick and Olivo to push the OSU advantage to 6-3.
Dayton cut the lead to two in the seventh on a RBI single by first baseman Forrest Belcher off of Cowboy reliever Brett McDonald.
Olivo added his fourth RBI on the day with a two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh that pushed the Oklahoma State lead to 7-4. Olivo finished the afternoon 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and one run scored.
Cowboy starter Jimmy Rhodes picked up the win to move to 1-0 on the year. He gave up three runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout. Flyer starter Cory Allen gave up six runs on eight hits in five innings of work in the losing effort.
Junior righthander Joe Weaver pitched a scoreless final 2.1 innings to pick up his first save of the year.
Oklahoma State will travel to Tucson to play the final two games of the Arizona trip. The Cowboys will take on Minnesota tomorrow at 5 p.m. CT with junior Scott Baker slated to take the mound.
