STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team announced its 2000-01 schedule Wednesday morning, featuring the first-ever event scheduled in the new OSU Athletic Center. The Cowgirls will host the Arkansas Lady 'Backs on December 1 at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
"The Arkansas game will be a huge game for our program," said OSU head coach Dick Halterman. "They come out of the Southeastern Conference, and its considered the best league in the country. We're trying to open the new arena with that game. It would be nice to get off with a win in that, and you're playing against a top-caliber team."
The 29-game schedule, including two exhibitions, begins on Thursday, Nov. 9. The Cowgirls will play the Australian Institute of Sport in an exhibition game as part of a doubleheader with the men's team in Enid. Game time in the Chisholm Trail Expo Center has yet to be determined.
This season, OSU will compete in three non-conference tournaments, the Bertha Teague Memorial Classic in Tulsa on Nov. 17-18, the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Nov. 24-25, and the Nassau Sunsplash Shootout in the Bahamas on Dec. 20-21.
The Cowgirls also have a non-conference road trip to Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, Mo., a team that features the nation's leading scorer from a year ago. Other home non-conference games include Washington on Dec. 3, Wichita State on Dec. 9 and West Virginia on Dec. 29.
The Big 12 Conference season begins on Wednesday, Jan. 3, as the Cowgirls travel to Waco, Texas, to face the Baylor Bears. Other featured matchups in Stillwater include Texas Tech on Jan. 6, Colorado on Jan. 10, Kansas on Jan. 17, and Texas on Feb. 17. The first game in the bedlam series will take place in Stillwater on Feb. 10, with a return trip to Norman on Feb. 24.
Oklahoma State will have two games televised by Fox Sports Net as part of the Big 12 Conference's TV package. On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Cowgirls will host Texas A&M at 1 p.m., and on Saturday, Feb. 3, OSU will play at Kansas State at 3 p.m.
The fifth Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Tournament will take place March 6-10, 2001, in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
