BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Freshman Matt McQuillan put himself in fourth place individually and led the OSU men's golf team into the same position after Monday's first two rounds of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
McQuillan's first-round 67 put him in a tie for the lead with Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder, but Molder blistered the course with a second-round 62 while McQuillan fell back with a 1-under-par 70. McQuillan's junior teammate, Anders Hultman, carded rounds of 70 and 68 to sit one stroke behind McQuillan in a tie for fifth.
At 2-under as a team, the Cowboys are tied for fourth place with UAB. Georgia Tech (15-under), Georgia (13-under) and Clemson (11-under) hold down the top three spots in the team standings.
Heading into Tuesday's final round, McQuillan and Hultman are joined in the top 20 by freshman Par Nilsson, who is tied for 19th at even par. J.C. DeLeon (plus-7, tied for 41st) and Boyd Summerhays (12-over, 58th place) round out the OSU lineup.
The event is being played at the par-71 Old Overton Golf Course in Birmingham, Ala.
