OSU Softball Claims Run Rule Victory Over Nebraska
February 16, 2023 | Cowgirl Softball
Clearwater, Fla. – True freshman Kyra Aycock was one out away from a perfect game in her debut as a collegiate starter in leading the No. 5 Oklahoma State softball team to a 10-0 run-rule victory over Nebraska in five innings Thursday afternoon.
With the win, OSU improved to 5-1 and Nebraska fell to 4-2.
A two-out single in the top of the fifth inning ended Aycock's bid to become the first Cowgirl true freshman ever to throw a perfect game and the first since 2010 to throw a no-hitter. She retired the very next batter after allowing the single to close out her first win for the Pokes.
The Cowgirls scored three runs in the bottom of the first to set the tone. Following two walks and a double from freshman Tallen Edwards, junior Katelynn Carwile nabbed her first career triple with a bases-clearing effort to left field that scored Rachel Becker, Edwards and Kiley Naomi. It was the fifth-straight game in which OSU has taken the lead in the first inning.
The Cowgirls tacked on two more runs in the third courtesy of Carwile and senior Morgyn Wynne. After a one-out single from Lexi Kilfoyl, Carwile notched her second triple of the game to bring Kilfoyl home. Wynne followed with a single that brought home Carwile and put the Cowgirls up, 5-0.
OSU brought the game into run-rule territory with five runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run triple from Chyenne Factor and Wynne's second homer of the season, a three-run blast to left center.
As part of the game, Becker reached base safely in each of her three plate appearances with a walk, a hit by pitch and a single. Dating back to the Ole Miss game on Feb. 12, she has reached base safely in seven of her last eight plate appearances.
The Cowgirls return to action at 9 a.m. CT tomorrow for a top-10 matchup with No. 8/9 Virginia Tech. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
