Cowboys Fall Short To No. 10 Oklahoma
April 23, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad dropped its regular season finale to No. 10 Oklahoma at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, 4-0.
The Cowboys finish the regular season at 18-6 and 2-3 in Big 12 play, which marks their highest win percentage (.750) since coach Jay Udwadia took the helm.
"Anytime you play Oklahoma it's going to be a big match for us," coach Jay Udwadia said. "We had match point in doubles and didn't capitalize on that and we also had some key opportunities in singles that (Oklahoma) came up with, which happened to be the difference."
Lucas Gerch/Jurence Mendoza got OSU started in doubles action by taking a quick 3-0 edge over Oklahoma's Maxime Mora/Andre Biro on court three. The dominant Cowboy duo went on to win their match, 6-2, putting the Pokes one win away from the point.
On court one, All-Americans Julian Cash/Arjun Kadhe were locked in a battle with Axel Alvarez/Andrew Harris as the two teams went back-and-forth. In the end, the Sooners made a late surge in the match to take a 6-4 win.
With the first two matches done, court three featured the deciding match as Cowboys Tristan Meraut/Lukas Finzelberg faced Oklahoma's Spencer Papa/Alex Ghilea. Meraut/Finzelberg took a quick 3-0 lead in the match, but the Sooner duo climbed its way back and forced a tiebreak. After exchanging numerous points, Papa/Ghilea took the tiebreak 7-5 and won the doubles point to give Oklahoma (14-9; 3-2 Big 12) a 1-0 advantage going into singles.
"It was a close match," Cash said. "I feel like we could have won all three doubles matches and taken the point, but in the end we just didn't take advantage of our opportunities today."
After losing the doubles point, the Cowboys had a strong start in singles play as four Cowboys led early in the first set. However, Oklahoma continued to battle and ended up taking four first sets in singles.
Meraut was the first Poke to fall in singles play as he dropped his match against No. 57 Ghilea on court four, 6-3, 6-2, extending the Sooner lead to 2-0.
Kadhe, ranked No. 121, had an opportunity to extend his match to a third set on court two as he was tied at four with No. 26 Alvarez, but the Sooner won three of the final four games in the second to give Oklahoma a 3-0 edge with four matches still in play.
After a tiebreak win from Gerch, the Cowboys looked to have the momentum back in the favor as Mendoza was close to clinching his match on six and Finzelberg was in a battle on three.
The only match in question was on court one with No. 45 Cash. Oklahoma's Harris won a hard-earned tiebreak in the first set against the Cowboy, 10-8. In the second, Cash won a couple games to start, but Harris proved to be too much as he clinched the match with a straight-set win, 7-6(8), 6-3, to give the Sooners a 4-0 win over the Pokes.
With the loss, the Cowboys will be the four seed in next week's Big 12 Men's Tennis Championships, which will be hosted by Oklahoma State at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
"Big 12 Championships are coming around and we've seen every team," coach Udwadia said. "We are going to work are butts off to get ready for that tournament and hopefully do something special at home."
