STILLWATER – Oklahoma State had its three-match unbeaten streak come to an end Friday night as Bedlam-rival Oklahoma knocked off the Cowgirls, 2-0, in front of nearly 1,300 fans at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Â
With the loss, OSU fell to 7-6-3 on the season and 2-3-1 in Big 12 Conference play. It was the Cowgirls' fourth-straight loss to the rival Sooners, though OSU still holds a commanding 20-8-3 lead in the all-time series.
Â
OU (11-4-1, 4-2-0) controlled the match throughout much of the 90 minutes and outshot the Cowgirls by a 13-7 margin while owning a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Â
One of those corner kicks resulted in a score. In the 21st minute, Madison Saliba delivered a ball into the box that an Oklahoma State defender headed in for an own goal to give the Sooners a 1-0 lead.
Â
The visitors took that advantage into the break in an opening half that saw OU record nine shots to just one for the Cowgirls.
Â
The Sooners doubled their lead less than three minutes into the second half. This time it was a free kick just outside the 18-yard box that Saliba sent through traffic. However, the ball went untouched into the back of the net for Saliba's third goal of the season to put OU up, 2-0.
Â
Battling to erase the deficit, OSU created several opportunities late in the match, including a header by Rachel VanFossen that landed just wide of the far post and a free-kick blast off the foot of Jaci Jones that Kassidie Stade was able to stop for her lone save of the match.
Â
OSU returns to action Saturday when the Cowgirls host TCU at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.Â
