Stillwater, Okla. ---- Jawun Evans finished with a career-high 42 points in a 74-72 loss to Oklahoma Wednesday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The 42 points from Evans were the most for a freshman in program history, and tied for the third most ever by an OSU player. Evans also brought down seven rebounds and had six assists.
Oklahoma State found itself in position to win the game in the final possession, trailing 74-72 with less than a second remaining.
Jeffrey Carroll's three looked good off the backboard, but bounced out of the rim at the last possible second.
Although the Cowboys started slow in the first half, the second was a different story. After trailing at halfitme, Oklahoma State came out in the second half looking for a run and got one.
A Jeff Newberry dunk cut the deficit to single digits at 49-41.
An Evans layup a couple possessions later forced an Oklahoma timeout, and another Evans layup off a steal out of the timeout cut the deficit to 49-45.
Oklahoma responded to the 10-0 Cowboy run with a run of its own, and eventually led 71-63 with less than a minute remaining.
As for the first half, Oklahoma State responded well to a quick Oklahoma 5-0 run, and used a 5-2 run of its own to make it a two-point game at the first media timeout.
Evans led the way from the start, scoring nine of the team's first 12 points to start the game. Evans finished the half with 19 points.
Oklahoma State trailed 43-41 at the half.
Buddy Hield led the way for Oklahoma, as he finished with 26 points and eight rebounds.
Alongside Evans, Oklahoma State also had a solid performance from Chris Olivier. He finished with 12 points.
