STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Cowgirls both took home their sixth consecutive Cowboy Jamboree titles Saturday at the OSU Cross Course with Cerake Geberkidane and Ingeborg Loevnes leading the way.
The 79th annual Jamboree included nearly 500 small college and university athletes from 31 schools, but it was OSU who continued its domination of the event.
In the men's 8K race, the Pokes cruised to a team win, scoring 40 points with three top-six finishers including the champion Geberkidane.
"Cerake is taking it to another level," coach Dave Smith said. "He's a much better athlete than he was last year and I've been saying all year that I've seen a maturity and focus to his training that hasn't been there before – he's going to do something big this year."
Geberkidane's 24:31.3 was the best time of the day and more than 45 seconds better than his previous Jamboree best. Vegard Oelstad finished third with a 24:52.9, and newcomer Josh Thompson ran a 25:01.6 to finish fifth. NCAA Champion Chad Noelle finished 14th, Brian Gohlke finished 17th, Noah Gade 24th and Matthew Fayers 32nd to round out the scoring for OSU.
"To win with an OSU singlet is very exciting," Geberkidane said. "The sun reflecting on the bright orange as you're crossing the line first, it's just an unreal moment. I just hope I can win at a bigger race and also as a team at a bigger race and see a big smile on everyone's faces, especially my coach."
On the women's side, Loevnes was the Cowgirls' highest finisher with a 21:17.5 6K time that was good enough for third.
"It was hard, but a lot of fun," Loevnes said. "I kept thinking that at least I know the course and where the hills are, so I was trying to use that to my advantage."
Although Loevnes is in her first season as a member of the cross country team, she has led the Cowgirls as their highest finisher in each of the first two meets, including a win at the Cowboy Preview.
"If Ingeborg can relax and learn to trust herself and her ability, she's going to be great," Smith said. "She gets a little worked up, a little nervous, but when the gun goes off, she's OK. We just have to figure out how to keep her calm going into it."
Although OSU finished with 39 points to take its sixth-straight team title, Alabama made it close by finishing second with 41.
Natalie Baker, true freshman Katie Spencer and two-time All-American Kaela Edwards each ended up in the top-10, while Aurora Dybedokken, Molly Sughroue and Savannah Camacho wrapped up the scoring.
Christian Liddell made a statement, running unattached at the event. The Cowboy true freshman ran a 25.19.2 for the 11th best time of the day. Craig Nowak also ran unattached. The Cowboy All-American had not competed all season due to an injury, but ran a 25:47.9 in his first 8K of the year.
"Craig has come a long way in a very short period of time," Smith said. "Two weeks ago, he couldn't run two miles just jogging. If in another two weeks he has the same kind of progression and then another two more weeks like that, by the time we get to the Big 12 meet I think he'll be back to a top-five, top-six guy. Christian, a true freshman, we had planned on redshirting him, but he ran really well today and he's probably not redshirting anymore."
The next meet on the schedule for the Cowboys and Cowgirls is the Crimson Classic on Oct. 16 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. OSU's next home meet will be the Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Oct. 31.
