Oklahoma State University unveiled a new, state-of-the-art cross country course in 2019 that serves as home to the OSU men’s and women’s cross country teams. The Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course is unlike any other in the nation, making it the standard for collegiate cross country competition.
The course is named after Don and Shellie Greiner, as well as Don’s father Ken, who have pledged a significant gift to Oklahoma State Athletics.
The Greiner family has allocated funds to the course itself, with additional resources directed to counseling services for student-athletes. Additionally, more funding has been pledged by the estate of Don and Shellie Greiner.
“Our family has a long history with running sports and the Oklahoma State cross country course, dating back to my dad’s all-state days at Stillwater High in the 1950s,” said Don Greiner. “This gift combines that heritage, our love for Oklahoma State, our passion for running sports, and, of special importance to my wife Shellie and me, funds the student athlete counseling program, supporting and sustaining the entire student athlete - body, mind and spirit.”
Along with the naming rights, Oklahoma State has pledged to host, in partnership with the Simon Greiner Track and Field Program, high school track programs to help showcase both the world-class course and the prep programs.
OSU coaches will also host coaching clinics, focusing on supporting the effort to get more kids involved in the sport of running in Oklahoma City.
The Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course underwent a multi-million dollar renovation in preparation for the 2019 Midwest Regional and the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships. The course also hosted the 2021 Big 12 Championships, 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships and 2023 NCAA Midwest Regional Championship races.

Construction of the course began on June 12, 2018, and was completed in July of 2019. The course was completely sodded and consists of just under one million square feet of Astro Bermuda grass. Carved throughout wooded areas and prairie with varying elevations, the course was also widened to 10-plus meters throughout and the new starting straightaway is 850 meters.
The cross country course contains 1,200 radio-controlled irrigation heads, one for every 35 feet, which keeps the course in pristine condition. Built to last for up to 60 years, high density polyethylene irrigation piping was used to build a stronger, longer-lasting irrigation system for the course. A new drainage system was also installed along the perimeter of the course which is now framed with all new perimeter fencing.
The course was lengthened to 10K and offers four other different loop configurations for the runners: 8K, 6K, 5K and 2K. In competition, the men will run the 10K loop, while the women will run the 6K route. The setup of the course provides unique training opportunities for the teams. The straightaway to the finish box is designed with mounds on each side of the course to offer a view from above, as well as views of multiple race areas.
Another characteristic which sets the OSU course apart from any other in the country is the fact that it is one of the few courses actually located on a college campus. The course’s location positions it fittingly among the other world-class facilities on the campus of Oklahoma State.
